In recent years, the term “dark markets” has become increasingly prevalent in discussions surrounding cybercrime and online illicit activities. These markets, which operate on the dark web, are often associated with a range of illegal activities, including the sale of drugs, weapons, and stolen data. This section provides a broad overview of our experience accessing dark web marketplaces. We cover how easy they are to access, the kind of products and services available, and how they are different from conventional eCommerce marketplaces. However, as mentioned, dark web marketplaces are mostly used for illicit trade and illegal activities, which is why you need to avoid them unless you’re confident about your network security. The pre-processing relies on state-of-the-art heuristics18,19,20,21,28, including cospending clustering, intelligence-based clustering, behavioural clustering, and entity identification through direct interaction23. These techniques rely on the observation of patterns in the Bitcoin protocol transactions and user behaviour. First, addresses were grouped based on a set of conditions, following some of the heuristics mentioned above and discussed in Supplementary Information Section S1. Note that this step is unsupervised and there is no ground truth regarding the mapping between addresses and entities20. Then, clusters were identified as specific dark marketplaces, using transaction data collected by Chainalysis Inc. (the technique employed for the identification is similar to the one described in20). Identification of addresses by Chainalysis Inc. related to illicit activities has been relied upon in many law enforcement investigations29,30.

Dark markets typically operate using a “layered” system of websites, with each layer requiring a different level of access and anonymity. The surface web, which is accessible to anyone with an internet connection, serves as the entry point for most users. From there, users can access the dark web using specialized software like Tor, which allows them to browse websites that are not indexed by traditional search engines.

Once on the dark web, users can access dark markets using a variety of methods, including direct links or through hidden services like the now-defunct Silk Road. Once inside a dark market, users can browse listings, make purchases, and leave reviews, much like they would on a traditional e-commerce platform. However, because of the anonymity provided by the dark web and cryptocurrencies, it can be difficult for law enforcement to track down and prosecute those involved in illegal activities on dark markets.

Taking ten random samples for each product category will produce only rough estimates and was only intended to illustrate the estimated difference between prices on darknet markets and the surface web. Furthermore, a historic price could not be obtained for all product samples, and prices can vary considerably over time (e.g., original soccer shirts or Nike shoes), influencing estimations. We can also see greater differences between dark and surface web prices for higher-value products, such as watches, clothes, and jewelry. Dark market vendors might prioritize higher-valued products, which can generate profits faster than products with lower profit margins (e.g., accessories, Tobacco). Such a strategy would support the idea that darknet market vendors might tailor their products more towards end-consumers, who purchase fewer items, rather than businesses, which could purchase items in high volumes with the purpose of re-selling them.

Unlike traditional exchanges, dark pools aren’t available to everyday retail investors. Instead, they’re meant for institutional investors who regularly place large orders for their clients. The purpose is to avoid affecting the market when these large block orders are placed. This allows them to make trades without having to explain their rationale as they look for buyers or sellers. If the amount of trading in dark pools owned by broker-dealers and electronic market makers continues to grow, stock prices on exchanges may not reflect the actual market.
