Understanding the Dark Web Drug Market 2024
The dark web drug market 2024 continues to evolve, driven by technological advancements and shifting societal norms. This underground segment of the internet remains a significant concern for law enforcement agencies and public health officials worldwide.
In panels (d, e), we show the median net income in USD of all sellers and buyers per quarter, respectively. In panels (f, g), we show the PDF of the total money received by each seller and the total money sent by each buyer, respectively. Some of the most well-known dark web marketplaces have been shut down, including Silk Road (closed in 2013), AlphaBay (taken down in 2017, although it reportedly resurfaced in 2022) and Hydra Market (shut down in 2022).
Since different agencies use different data sources (e.g., border or inland seizures), some measurement differences are to be expected, but they also illustrate how inconsistently seizures reflect the true prevalence of counterfeits. Thus, additional data sources to estimate counterfeit affected products would be helpful to better understand the counterfeit landscape and aid efforts at prevention. In May, Europol announced the results of the international law enforcement operation codenamed ‘SpecTor’ that resulted with the seizure of the dark web marketplace. If your company falls victim to a cyberattack, like a severe data breach, in a period of high stress you’ll want to have a dark web monitoring service that succinctly debriefs you and your SOC team of how critical and severe this threat level is. Dark web monitoring entails actively searching, scanning, and collecting data from dark web sources to identify potential cybersecurity threats and stolen information.
To be classified as a seller, an entity must simultaneously satisfy the six feature threshold criteria, as follows. Increasingly, the FBI is working to disrupt major criminal online operations such as Monopoly Marketplace or Hive instead of waiting to make arrests simultaneously, according to officials who spoke last week at the RSA Conference. A highly productive dark web narcotics vendor, Banmeet Singh, aged 40 and residing in Haldwani, India, has admitted guilt and agreed to relinquish $150 million—the largest sum ever seized by the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Similarly, they determine the specific interests of visitors’ navigation and present appropriate content. For example, they prevent the same advertisement from being shown again to the visitor in a short period.
What is the Dark Web?
Their collaboration led to the creation of the short-lived Infinity Forum in 2023, which we also discussed in our Hydra Aftermath post, a darknet marketplace/forum offering a range of hacking services and resources. This partnership was not without its complexities, as evidenced by fluctuating relations and public criticisms. For purposes of the workshop, the dark web was defined as those hyperlinked services on the dark net accessible only through The Onion Router (or Tor) protocol or similar protocols.
Just in 2021, the total black market transactions added $2.1B to the crypto market volume. As encryption, anonymity and privacy are central to the design of the darknet and its various drug markets, up-to-date information on drug trends is difficult to come by. Analysis from the World Drug Report 2023 suggests that whilst the average buyer is spending more on drug transactions (rising from $100 per transaction in 2018 to $500 in 2021), the number of active buyers and transactions have notably decreased. Following the demise of Hydra Market in 2022, dozens of new darknet markets emerged – a number of these being darknet drug markets which targeted former Hydra customers and vendors. As it’s inaccessible via the surface web, users require a software known as The Onion Router (or TOR) to get to the darknet. Originally created by the US Government, TOR is an anonymising browser that allows users to enter the darknet and blocks their identity.
Throughout Russia’s war with Ukraine, Solaris has become affiliated with pro-Kremlin cyberhacking group Killnet. Run by anonymous hacker “KillMilk”, Killnet has come to the attention of the Five Eyes Intelligence Network for its distributed denial of service (DDOS) attacks against NATO and Ukrainian cyber infrastructure. The deep web is about 90% of the internet, while the dark web makes up about 5%. A large portion of deepweb links are sites hidden behind security firewalls or authentication forms, such as banking sites or any of the billions of web pages that are password protected.
The dark web is a part of the internet that requires specific software, configurations, or authorization to access. Unlike the surface web, which is indexed by search engines, the dark web is not easily navigable and is often associated with illicit activities.
Moreover, the secretive and often illicit nature of dark web activities complicates efforts to collect and utilize intelligence data while adhering to legal and ethical standards. Not only is the Dark Web’s DDoS market still active in 2023, but the prices of attacks are lower than ever. Ranging from $10 for an hour-long attack to $750 for a month-long attack, each with 10,000–15,000 requests per second, the prices depend on a variety of factors. Attacks with a smaller number of requests typically sell for less, and the target networks’ protection level also impacts the price.
Trends in the Dark Web Drug Market 2024
Additionally, we observe that, except for U2U-only sellers, the median income of the other types of sellers drops after the major shock caused by operation Bayonet (see Supplementary Information Section S4). The most affected are multisellers, with a drop of 78% in the median income, followed by market-U2U and market-only sellers, with a drop of 59% and 47%, respectively. Although these three types of sellers are significantly affected, they recover and surpass the median income value they had before Bayonet (see Fig. 4c; Supplementary Information Section S4). DEA continued to partner with the National Police of the Netherlands following the July takedown in an ongoing effort to identify individuals who purchase drugs on the dark web and to further disrupt dangerous drug trafficking. Future enforcement action such as search warrants, arrests, and seizures could come as a result of intelligence gathered from the knock and talks.
In 2024, several trends are notable in the dark web drug market:
- Increased Anonymity: The rise of cryptocurrencies like Monero and innovations in privacy-focused technologies enhance anonymity for buyers and sellers.
- Diverse Offerings: A broader range of substances is available, from traditional drugs like cannabis and cocaine to synthetic opioids and research chemicals.
- Escalating Prices and Competition: As demand increases, prices may fluctuate. However, competition among vendors often leads to lower prices, enticing more users into the market.
- Enhanced Security Measures: Marketplaces are implementing stronger security protocols to protect against law enforcement infiltration and cyber-attacks.
